Length 93.3cm The VII C is undoubtedly one of the most famous of the U-boats "Grey Wolves" of the Second World War. In terms of Germany's U-boat building programme, it is regarded as both the last and the climax of the submarine era, which came to an end in 1944. The VII C, like no other, reflects the rise and fall of the U-boot as one of the weapons Germany used during the war. Equipped with four bow and one stern torpedo tubes this u-boat was a fearsome weapon. With a total of 659 supplied to the German Navy, the VII C accounted for roughly 70 per cent of the submarine battle fleet of the German Reich. It thus formed the backbone of the U-boot fleet and was an extremely reliable submarine. Even after the war, such qualities were so highly regarded that some of the submarines, as prized spoils of war and as part of post-war reparations, later saw many years of service in other navies. | |
