No other vessel in the world is comparable to the U.S.S. Tarawa and her sister ship, the U.S.S. Saipon. Belonging to the American amphibious forcec, she represents a combination of helicopter carrier and floating part. 30 Marine Corps helicopters are stationed on the flight deck, ready for action. The Tarawa's unique features include a sorcalled wet deck. A gigant stern gate provides access to a mobile harbour basin where action is required. The Tarawa has a total displacement of 39,300 tons. Powered by two Westinghouse steam turbines of 70,000 SHP driving two propelling screws, she has a max. speed of 24 knots
